It is merely on the wind up so it begins to falter, although slap-upwards finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have zero high problem in the traditions down its incredibly unappealing label.” [ 8 ]

The brand new film’s journalist and you can director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, to possess mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) did at the local casino and old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic script, the new cast’s suavely controlled gestures out-of love and you will risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly cocky photos (in addition to his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle a hidden classic of genre.” [ 10 ]

Ace activities of the Manhood Powell, due to the fact a gambling household overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, because the a police inspector, in addition to up the score . While the plot follows a common trend, the new characterizations are fresh additionally the shows sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you will topical, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touching. Strange digital camera angles arrive on occasion so you can intensify attention and you will briefly arrest the attention. Strong teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing given that manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand new author and user producer, as well as aids in rendering it a soft design.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily a matter of watching Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly when you are a giant shed of actors and stars offer him standard service. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable little lady exactly who brings forth the new finest in your and you may Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you may slinky vixen whom will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy due to the fact villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of in a position tour as a weary cops inspector whom eventually shuts the situation. A great amount of ingesting and you will puffing is done because of the the concerned.” [ 12 ]
